Meet James, Head of Industry Management at LAND®
LAND®, an AMETEK business based in Dronfield, UK, is a leader in non-contact temperature measurement whose innovations support steelmaking, glass manufacturing, hydrocarbon processing, and energy production across the world. James leads efforts to diversify LAND’s business and improve customer engagement across the various industries they serve. Learn more about his AMETEK journey.
How did your AMETEK career begin?
I joined LAND in 2018 in a regional sales management position in Dubai. It was a challenging job, but an exciting opportunity. I stayed there for about five years and then came to Dronfield to lead our hydrocarbon processing industry strategy. I became the Head of Industry Management in 2023 and now lead a team of product engineers, application engineers, and industry managers. I’ve had a great and varied career with AMETEK so far!
Tell us more about industry management at LAND.
The Industry Team is the bridge between our customers, our experts at LAND, and our portfolio of products, software, and services. We’re not only focused on how a product is more successful, but how a specific industry, market, and application vertical is more successful.
Our goal is to really understand at a deep level what drives our customers’ decision making – looking at what they’re pain points and challenges are and how we can help. Then we take that feedback to the product development team and the design engineering team and come up with solutions that result in products and software that the sales team can present to the market in a convincing and simple way.
“There’s really a role for creative thinking in engineering, and that’s what we’re trying to bring to LAND and AMETEK.”
What do you find most rewarding about working at LAND?
LAND is a great place to work for people who are entrepreneurial and who are innovative. There’s a lot of opportunity here to access a huge variety of industries and markets. We serve heavy industry across the world in some of the most important applications. It’s challenging, it’s exciting, and ultimately rewarding because you’re playing a really important role in the global manufacturing economy.
What would you say to aspiring engineers looking to join AMETEK?
I’m quite passionate about presenting the industries we serve as attractive career paths for young engineers, rather than heavy, loud, and challenging, which is how they may be viewed at a surface level. I would tell aspiring engineers to think differently and innovatively. There’s really a role for creative thinking in engineering, and that’s what we’re trying to bring to LAND and AMETEK.
