Meet Fletcher, an Engineering Management Program (EMP) Graduate

Fletcher is a mechanical engineer and a 2024 graduate of AMETEK’s Engineering Management Program (EMP). Here he tells us about his experience in the program and what it’s like to work for AMETEK businesses across the globe.

What attracted to you a career with AMETEK?

One of the main things I really like about AMETEK is that we create a wide variety of products between many unique businesses. Working for a company that’s involved in various niche markets and technologies is really appealing, especially when combined with a rotational program that would give me the chance to move around and gain technical experience with multiple businesses.

What was your experience of the EMP?

It was very positive! I had the chance to work with unique products and technologies and gained a lot of experience in different roles within the company. Coming out of college, I wasn’t quite sure what field or position I wanted to go into, so this program was great for getting me exposed to a lot of different roles within the company and helping me find out where I can best contribute and what I might want to do going forward.

By the end, I made an impact on interesting projects, worked with talented engineers, and did lots of travelling. Throughout my rotations, I moved from California to Illinois before finally settling in Connecticut. I even got the chance to travel to Germany and Malaysia.

“It helps you get a feel for the different sides of the business and what options are out there further down the road. There are a lot more options than I expected.”

Which AMETEK businesses did you have the opportunity to work with?

My first rotation was with Intellipower in California, who primarily makes uninterruptible power supplies. My second rotation was with Atlas Material Testing Solutions in Illinois, where I mainly worked with weathering testing chambers. My final rotation was with Haydon Kerk Pittman (HKP) in Connecticut, who specialize in linear actuators, stepper motors, and other motion solutions. At HKP I worked on the quality and manufacturing engineering side of the business. Each rotation was very different in terms of the technology and products, which was great to experience.

What support have you received from colleagues in your development?

The colleagues I worked with were supportive, helpful, and always willing to answer questions. The engineering team made me feel very involved in projects; getting to learn from talented engineers at each of my rotations really helped me develop my professional experience and my engineering skillset. I was always able to talk to other engineers or my manager to go over designs and ideas, and when I worked with production assemblers or operators, they always helped me understand how they put together various products, and what I could do to help them out. It was a great learning experience.

How is AMETEK helping you reach your career goals?

Throughout the program, AMETEK has provided lots of different opportunities as far as career growth. We were assigned a mentor who we can ask career questions, and he’s been helpful for general questions and looking at different career options. AMETEK also encouraged us to get exposed to different areas of engineering, from design to manufacturing. This helped us get a feel for the different sides of the business and what options are out there further down the road. I wasn’t heart-set on any one career path, so it was great to see that there are so many options – more than I expected.

What project has been particularly satisfying for you to work on?

One of the most significant projects was helping develop a battery charging rack during my first rotation. It was soon after graduating college and it was my first major project. I gained a lot of great experience, such as what practical design and development are really like. It was great to add value early on in my career.

What’s next in your AMETEK journey?

After completing the program, I’m heading back to California to work as a mechanical design engineer with AMETEK Pacific Design Technologies (PDT). I’m excited for what’s to come!
