The AMETEK Foundation celebrates 20 years of supporting Science Explorers
The AMETEK Foundation works with Science Explorers to support STEM education in communities where we work and live by taking science out of textbooks and into students’ hands.
When Jupiter Jen witnesses “ah-ha” moments from children conducting scientific experiments, it is the greatest affirmation that she and her team of educational instructors are doing important work.
As Founder and CEO of Science Explorers, that work became a life’s mission for Jennifer "Jupiter Jen” Moorehead and her team of nicknamed educators, whose purpose is making science more fun for thousands of students across the United States.
Science Explorers provide inquiry-based programs that stimulate and empower young minds with hands-on science experiments and a curriculum geared toward elementary school students that aligns with school programming. Lessons include engaging topics such as “Matter Monsters,” “Savvy Circuits,” “Fantastic Fizz,” “Water Rules,” and “The Ins and Outs of the Digestive System.”
Jennifer “Jupiter Jen” Moorehead started Science Explorers in 1999 to introduce sciences to children in a fun, friendly, accessible way. The AMETEK Foundation is proud to celebrate over 20 years of partnering with Science Explorers to drive more access to STEM education, especially in underserved areas. Through the AMETEK Foundation’s support, Science Explorers has sparked curiosity in STEM topics for over 35,000 students through nearly 300,000 science lessons.
“STEM is a part of everything we do. It’s imperative to teach children the power of critical thinking, deductive reasoning, and learning lessons from our mistakes,” said Jupiter Jen. “It’s also helpful to show children that you don’t have to be good in all areas of science. Our program teaches kids that it’s okay to not be perfect, which is a valuable life lesson, even beyond the field of STEM.”
Establishing a STEM foundation early on ensures a pathway for future innovators whose ideas will continue advancing society and improving lives. Driven by technology solutions, this framework is vital to AMETEK’s company mission.
“At AMETEK, we understand that the advancement of our industry depends on improving STEM education and accessibility for everyone,” said Nathan Kerns, Senior Manager, Public Relations and Corporate Communications for AMETEK. “We are thankful for our longstanding partnership with Science Explorers and look forward to continuing to inspire students and their passion for discovery, together.”
The teachers that work with Science Explorers also see the organization’s value and the impact it makes on students.
“My students love the Science Explorers program,” said Ruth Ferraro, teacher at Paterson Public School No. 27 in New Jersey. “They talk about our upcoming labs days beforehand, about what we’re going to be doing during the lab, and about what happened afterward! I can't wait to see all the future scientists that first started with Science Explorers.”
After more than 20 years, Jupiter Jen and her team still have the same passion for making science fun for students, one “ah-ha” moment at a time.
