AMETEK showcases technology to students at the NBA Math Hoops Championships
The AMETEK Foundation recently partnered with Philadelphia-based non-profit, Learn Fresh, to host the organization’s 2023 NBA Math Hoops Global Championship.
Learn Fresh programs are designed to increase students’ engagement and achievement in STEM subjects by leveraging their passion for sports and entertainment. Their flagship program, NBA Math Hoops, is a board game, curriculum, and community program built around real-world NBA/WNBA athletes to develop algebra readiness and social-emotional competency for students in grades 4-8. It is through the support of partners like the AMETEK Foundation that NBA Math Hoops is offered at no-cost to students and educators. This year, a group of students from the U.S. and Australia were given the opportunity to attend the 2023 NBA Math Hoops Global Championship at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Vision Research, a business of AMETEK, kicked off the championship round with a hands-on demonstration of its Phantom high-speed cameras. The students were excited to learn that the cameras have been used for slow-motion instant replay images during sporting events and for slowing down their favorite superheroes in popular movies. They also learned about the applications where these cameras are used, including in animal behavior and sustainability research, and they even got to make their own slow-motion highlight reel as a keepsake.
“It was great to engage the students in a way that really sparked their curiosity and inspired them to think about how science and technology impact their everyday lives,” said Laura, Senior Inventory Coordinator at AMETEK Vision Research. “I was thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in Learn Fresh’s event through this partnership with the AMETEK Foundation.”
