Over several decades, this AMETEK business has produced countless innovative solutions catering to the ever-changing demands of the customers and industries they serve.

AMETEK Airtechnology is based in Sunbury-on-Thames, UK and has origins dating back to 1894.

Our Achievements

Airtechnology’s origins date back to 1894 with the formation of Muirhead and in 1923 with formation of Airscrew – two major British manufacturers serving the aerospace industry. These two companies came together in 2004 under AMETEK to form today’s business. With extensive experience and a broad portfolio of products, Airtechnology is a leading provider of custom-built cooling solutions for the aerospace, defense, and rail industries.

As part of a groundbreaking hydrogen-powered aircraft project, Airtechnology recently developed its most advanced and largest electric fan yet. Measuring 496 mm in diameter, this fan is designed for a hydrogen-fueled Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), helping move aviation toward a cleaner, more sustainable future. This high-performance unit provides clean electric power to the aircraft, replacing traditional gas-turbine APUs and eliminating harmful emissions.

Airtechnology specializes in custom thermal management and motion systems.

Meet the Team

Meet Simon, Senior Engineer – Qualification & Test for AMETEK Airtechnology.

Simon has been with the company for over 40 years, beginning his journey in 1984 as an Inspector in the Final Test Department at Muirhead Vactric Components. Over the decades, he’s held a variety of roles before taking on his current position in Qualification & Test. As a senior engineer, Simon supports the qualification test phase and handover to production for both new and legacy products.

His day-to-day work includes everything from creating Qualification Test Procedures and defining test equipment, to supporting offsite testing and compiling final reports. He’s been involved in a wide range of projects, including systems for aerospace, military, and commercial applications.

Simon says one of the most rewarding parts of his work is seeing a product through its entire lifecycle—from initial concept to qualification and into serial production.

“Working as part of the Engineering team at Sunbury has allowed me exposure to a wide variety of products, from fans and heaters to NBC air conditioning systems,” he says. “What makes this company special is the mix of individuals I work with daily – from the shop floor to senior management - and the opportunity to support emerging technologies that meet evolving customer needs.”
