From San Diego, California, AMETEK Programmable Power designs, manufactures, and markets precision, AC and DC programmable power supplies, electronic loads, application specific power subsystems, and compliance test solutions. Through innovative power and testing equipment, APP supports power conversion testing across a range of requirements from traditional power grid power sources to the variable needs of renewables. Subsidiary VTI Instruments provides products and systems used to monitor and record data that characterizes the physical integrity and performance of aircraft, engines, and other large structures, and automate the functional testing of complex electronic systems.
Under the well-known and respected Sorensen, Elgar, and California Instruments brands, AMETEK Programmable Power’s products serve a wide range of stimulus (T&M) and process power needs in applications including semiconductor fabrication, commercial and defense ATE, oil exploration, solar array and battery string simulation, avionics, general R&D and EMC compliance testing.
APP Production Floor The difference we make
Not every energy source works the same: for instance, power conversion equipment designed for oil and gas generation cannot simply be put into a system utilizing renewable sources. APP has developed in step with the vastly changing power needs of the twenty-first century. Renewable energy sources – a mix including solar, geothermal, wind and hydropower generation – will become a dominant source of power generation during the twenty-first century. But managing the changeover isn’t as easy as flipping a switch: considerations for successful change include improving storage capabilities, optimizing the reliability of systems to run between periods of low and high generation, and swapping between different power sources smoothly.

Jeff, a Senior Product Line Manager, is responsible for the DC power product line. He manages the entire product lifecycle from product inception, development, release, upgrades – right to product end of life.“Our products are critical to many applications is because they provide the power conversion that is necessary to meet the customer’s end goal. Without our precise power conversion, those applications would not be possible. We utilize the global supply chain of AMETEK and manufacture our products and technologies proudly here in the United States.
“Whether it’s working with engineering or production to solve a problem, or responding to customer requests for information or quotations, every day is different. We have a connection with our customers and care deeply for them. Our employees put in the time and have the creative mindset to overcome challenges and solve problems.
“Most importantly it’s fantastic to be part of a great team that understand the value of culture and diversity, and how that inspires us to create technologies that are changing the world around us”
Our Culture
AMETEK Programmable Power's success comes from fostering a positive, welcoming, and encouraging work environment for all employees - in fact they're the definition of a global company. Last year's Employee Appreciation Day in March was celebrated with tacos and frozen yogurt for the entire team; Cultural Diversity Day in June saw employees showcase their culinary skills with dishes tied closely to their family and background. Team members placed pins on a map to represent each team member's cultural heritage, displayed flags of their home countries, and exchange stories about their backgrounds.Find out more about the world of APP at programmablepower.com
