Meet Kristen from Atlas Material Testing and Technology
Kristen joined AMETEK’s Atlas Material Testing and Technology business after graduating in 2019. Now a member of the engineering team, she tells us about the experience of her first full-time position.
What has been your experience of working for AMETEK?
I didn’t really know what to expect because this is my first job out of college. I was extremely fortunate to have a group of people who support me in what I want to do, and how I want to progress with my career. So just having everyone backing me up has made a big difference.
How did you become an R&D Engineer?
I was originally hired as an optical engineer – and I still support that requirement – but this current role was created for me. I wanted to go in the direction towards chemistry, because that’s closer to chemical engineering, which I studied in college. Our VP of engineering and my supervisor were both talking with me about how I could develop even further, and they suggested R&D could be the way to go; that’s how it started.

What is the best part of your job?
I really like working with people. I got hired in November 2019, right before the pandemic, so I really missed meeting people while everyone was working from home. I was one of the few people going into the office, because my role primarily is in the lab. And I can’t just take a machine back to my condo! Now I just really enjoy having everyone there and the little conversations that happen randomly about people’s lives and not just strictly talking about work. That collaboration is great, professionally, and personally.
How do you feel that you’re making a difference?
I didn't previously think about the types of things that we test. We test car paint, wall paint, textiles, everything. Just to think about the process that it goes through and the testing that we do to make a product better and last longer is amazing. For instance, we test soda bottles under store lights, and you just never think about those different exposures to regular light or even sunlight. it’s just very cool to see that we can help make things last longer.
