DRONFIELD, ENGLAND—The need for fast, accurate determination of human body temperatures to prevent the spread of potentially infectious viruses such as the Swine Flue/ H1 N1led LAND Instruments International, a world leader in infrared temperature measurement, to develop a high-resolution thermal imaging camera system capable of rapidly discerning small differences in body temperature in large numbers of people.
A fixed thermal imaging system is among the most effective methods for rapid and non-intrusive screening a large number of people for elevated body temperatures. LAND human body temperature measurement systems have been used successfully since 2003 in airports worldwide for fast, non-contact detection of temperature radiance differences caused by fevers.
The vIRalert system now offered by LAND combines a powerful highly accurate thermal imager with advanced image processing software to prevent the spread of potentially contagious viruses. The vIRalert system uses a certified temperature calibration source and a proven “in-scene calibration” technique to achieve unparalleled accuracy versus other imaging camera techniques.
The vIRalert system takes a thermographic image of human body temperatures (typically the face) at a distance and compares that image with an extremely precise blackbody calibration source at high speed 9Hz to provide an accurate measurement of body temperature. If elevated temperatures are detected, an alarm condition alerts a staff member, who can then decide whether further action is required.
